Federal

The federal government provides resources for affordable homes in Minnesota, including low-income housing tax credits, funds for public housing, and other benefits such as the mortgage interest deduction for homeowners. Minnesota Housing Partnership advocates for federal policies that protect and expand affordable housing and reduce the growing gap between income and housing costs.

With an experienced team of technical assistance providers, connecting Native and rural communities across the country with invaluable federal resources, MHP provides unique knowledge of federal housing programs and how they advance local priorities.

MHP advocates at the federal agency level and with members of Congress by:

  • Submitting comments to federal agencies on policy and funding for housing and community development programs.
  • Providing information to Minnesota members of Congress and federal policy makers regarding the local impacts of federal policy and funding.
  • Supporting funding and financing that increases opportunities for affordable homes and community development.

MHP is proud to be a state partner of:

  • The ACTION Campaign, which advocates to increase affordable rental housing;
  • The National Low Income Housing Coalition, which works to ensure that low-income people across the country can access safe, affordable homes;
  • The National Housing Conference, which provides advocacy, research, and communications tools to the affordable housing community; and
  • United For Homes, a campaign to fund National Housing Trust Fund;

Minnesota Housing Partnership is currently working to:

  • Defend against budget cuts that threaten the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and USDA Rural Development.
  • Expand the Low Income Housing Tax Credit and key reforms to enhance the program’s efficiency to ultimately produce and preserve more quality, affordable homes. Learn more about the ACTION campaign here.
  • Protect the National Housing Trust Fund as Congress tackles housing finance reform.
  • Promote smart and equitable housing tax policies that bring homeownership within reach for more Americans and that invest savings in key affordable housing programs. Learn more about United for Homes here.
  • Advance the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing rule by defending the resources that sustain it.
